Tribal couple killed in Rangamati


An indigenous couple was killed by unidentified assailants on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at Dandachhara village in Bhushan-chhara union in Barkol upazila. Their one-year-old baby critically injured, police said.

The victims are Barun Kumar Chakma, 30, his wife Suporna Chakma, 24, and their child Kompo Chakma.

Barun was chopped to death in his house while his wife died at Rangamati hospital on Wednesday, police said. Critically injured Kompo is undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), hospital sources told this correspondent.

Parbattya Chattagram Jano Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) in a press release on Wednesday blamed Bengalee settlers of nearby Gurostanpara for the double murder.

Local Union Parishad (UP) member Tamir Ali, Emdad, Shahidul and Ibrahim of Kolabunia area led the attack, alleged PCJSS. They further alleged, BDR (Bangladesh Rifles) personnel did not respond to repeated appeals by villagers for emergency treatment to the injured.

PCJSS condemned the incident and demanded an exemplary punishment to the assailants.

No case was filed till filing of the report at 6 pm on Wednesday.
