More bodies condole Azad's death

More organisations and individuals yesterday condoled the death of eminent writer Humayun Azad.South Asian People's Union against Fundamentalism and Communalism and Ekatturer Ghatok Dalal Nirmul Committee expressed profound shock at the death of Prof Azad. Leaders of the organisations, in a joint statement, said Humayun Azad went to Germany to save his life after repeated death threats by the fundamentalist forces, but in vain. "The coalition government and its 'fundamentalist' ally cannot avoid the responsibility for his death," the statement added. The signatories to the statement are Prof Kabir Chowdhury, Barrister Shawkat Ali Khan, Major Gen (Retd) CR Datta, Artist Kaiyum Chowdhury, Artiste Kalim Sharafi, Journalist Shahriar Kabir and Journalist Julfikar Ali Manik Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof SMA Faiz said the death of Azad is an irreparable loss for the university as well as for the nation. At a rally at the Central Shaheed Minar, Dhaka University Teachers' Association (Duta) expressed deep shock at the death of Prof Azad and expressed sympathy for the members of the bereaved family. Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of the ruling BNP, also held a rally on the campus to express shock at the death of Azad. Condoling the death of Prof Azad, Bangla Academy Director General Abul Mansur Muhammad Abu Musa said his death is a great loss in the field of literature. Co-ordinator of 11 Party Advocate Abdus Samad, General Secretary of Bangladesher Sammobadi Dal Comrade Dilip Barua, and Advocate Abed Raza also condoled the death of Azad. Bangladesh Gonotantrik Ainjibi Samity, Bangladesh Gono-Azadi League, Centre for Women Journalists Bangladesh, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, Coalition for the Urban Poor, The Theatre, Panjeree Publications Ltd, Jahangirnagar Film Society, Bangladesh Pustak Prakashak O Bikreta Samity, Sonar Bangla Jubo Parishad, Banga-bandhu Lalitkala Academy and Pubali Bank Employees Union also condole the death.
