15 injured in Jessore bomb attack

Unnamed criminals hurled five bombs in and outside a teashop, leaving 15 people injured, 11 of them critically in Jessore on Monday, witnesses and police said.

The bombs were charged at about 9:00pm at Churhamonkati Bazaar, eight kilometres from Jessore Kotwali Police Station.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahinoor Islam of the police station said nine injured are witnesses to the killing of Awami League (AL) worker Akhtar Hossain in a bomb attack in soccer violence at Churhamonkati last year.

Witnesses said the injured were having tea at the shop, when the bombs exploded with a big bang creating panic in the neighbourhood. The assailants shot their way out of the scene and left in a white microbus.

The severely injured are under going treatment in Jessore General Hospital.

The superintendent of police said Jessore town has been put on high alert. But no-one was arrested in this connection.

The OC said that 10 of the 11 severely injured are AL leaders and activists.

In the instant reaction, the AL brought out a procession to protest the bomb attack. The president of Jessore district AL and former lawmaker, Ali Reza Raju, and General Secretary Shahin Chakladar visited the injured in hospital.
