DU turns down burial demand of Azad's family
DU Correspondent
Dhaka University (DU) syndicate last night turned down the demand of eminent teacher and writer Prof Humayun Azad's family to bury him on the premises of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam's grave on the campus."The syndicate has decided to extend all sorts of cooperation for his (Azad) funeral, but it is against meeting the demand (of the family)," DU Vice-chancellor (VC) Prof SMA Faiz, who chaired the emergency Syndicate meeting, told reporters later. Quoting a Syndicate decision of 1986 which stipulates that no DU teacher can be buried on the campus, the Syndicate members while taking the decision also referred to its turning down the request for burial of litterateur Shawkat Osman and Prof Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury on the campus. The family of Azad, who died in Munich on Thursday, made the demand at a press briefing on Monday. Asked where Azad would be buried now that the Syndicate has turned down their demand, the family refused to say anything.
