Staff Correspondent
Tolerance and knowledge are the major weapons to combat new forms of terrorism that thrives on fear, ignorance and misunderstanding, said speakers at a book launching ceremony yesterday. To combat terrorist activities by fundamentalists, the world community must investigate into and analyse the nature of terrorism, said US Ambassador Harry K Thomas as special guest. The publication ceremony of the book titled 'Strengthening Cooperation and Security in South Asia-Post 9/11' was held on the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) premises, with Reaz Rahman, adviser to the foreign ministry, as chief guest. The new face of terrorism is not only a threat to a single country, but a crime against humanity and it shatters the fundamental bases of the human condition, said Reaz. He added that checking arms smuggling and various illegal activities should be a priority while combating the new threats to South Asia. Farooq Sobhan, editor of the book and former ambassador, hoped that the upcoming 13th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) summit would be a landmark in dealing with security threats that dog South Asia. The book is the outcome of two regional conferences held in July and September in 2003 under the auspices of BEI. International relations experts and professionals from across South Asia attended the events.
