Editors worried at threat to Prothom Alo

Editors of the country's leading dailies and weeklies yesterday expressed grave concern and condemned the destructive activities by religious fanatics against the Prothom Alo.

They urged the government to take appropriate steps against the 'evil quarters' and hoped all concerned would help stop their destructive activities.

"We note with grave concern that a section of bigots are involved in destructive activities and negative propaganda against one of the leading newspapers -- the Prothom Alo-- following publication of a series of stories titled 'Terrorist activities in greater Chittagong," they said in a joint statement

It is depressing and condemnable. It is an attack on the freedom of the press, the statement added.

"We urge all concerned to help stop this type of unholy activities.

We believe the government would take appropriate steps to stop the destructive activities of a vested quarter," they said.

The signatories to the statement include Enayetullah Khan, editor of The New Age, Rahat Khan, acting editor of The Ittefaq, Bazlur Rahman, editor of The Sangbad, Reazuddin Ahmed, Editor of The News Today, Ataus Samad, editor of the Weekly Ekhon, Shafiq Rehman, editor of The Jai Jai Din, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury of The Bangladesh Observer, Moazzem Hossain, editor of The Financial Express, Abed Khan, editor of The Bhorer Kagoj, Zahiduzzaman Faruque of the Daily Arthaneeti and Motiur Rahman Chowdhury, chief editor of the Manabjamin.
