Freedom fighter Mortuza Khan dies in road accident


Engineer Golam Mortuza Khan, a valiant freedom fighter and politician, died in a road accident in Netrokona yesterday morning. He was 63.

Mortuza was one of the leaders of the student movement in 1960s. He was also actively involved in trade unionism and left politics.

Mortuza went to Netrokona on Friday.He used to go there every week as he was setting up a primary school at Katli.

The accident occurred when his car was rammed by a truck on his way back to Dhaka and left him dead on the spot. His driver and a companion were critically injured.

He left behind his wife Ayesha Khanam, general secretary of Bangladesh Mohila Parishad, daughter Urmi Khan, a lecturer of North-South University, and a large number of relatives, colleagues and admirers.

Different political and social organisations expressed shock at the sudden death of Mortuza Khan.

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina in a condolence message expressed deep shock and prayed for the salvation of the departed soul.

Gonoforum President Dr Kamal Hossain and General Secretary Saifuddin Ahmed Manik yesterday in a statement said Mortuza Khan was one of the founders of the organisation and an activist of progressive democratic movement since 1960s.

Ain o Salish Kendra in a press release recollected his backstage contribution in social work and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family.
