Action taken against 9 jail officials for duty neglect

A jailer and three deputy jailers were suspended yesterday after they were transferred from Dhaka Central Jail on August 27 for neglect of duty that led to smuggling-in of bombs and contraband, including drugs.Jailer Belal Hossain and deputy jailers Mozaffar Ahmed, Enamul Kabir and Shahjahan Bepari were transferred after the August 22 recovery of two truckloads of contraband including eight kilograms of marijuana, Phensidyl, utensils, water-bottles and other containers. The authorities also served notices on jail superintendents Moksed Ali and Harun-or-Rashid. Three other deputy jailers were transferred yesterday on the same charge and are likely to face suspension. The contraband was seized in a search inside the jail after a sweeper found a grenade in a sewer between cell Nos. 26 and 90, a day after the August 21 grenade attack on an Awami League rally on Bangabandhu Avenue. The authorities suspended six jail guards immediately after the recovery of the grenade.
