Thousands take to streets

Thousands of opposition activists yesterday took to the streets demanding resignation of the government for what they said was its failure to ensure safety of the people.Carrying placards and banners, leaders and activists of front organisations of the Awami League gathered at the central Shaheed Minar at 3:00pm amid tight security also to protest the attempt on the life of Opposition Leader and AL President Sheikh Hasina. Addressing a brief rally there, Awami League General Secretary Abdul Jalil said the Awami League has rejected the government probe committee on August 21 attack as it was only a farce. AL Presidium member Tofail Ahmed called on all to forge a united movement against the four-party alliance government. Presided over by City AL Vice-President Omar Ali, the rally was also addressed by Nurul Islam Nahid, Abdul Mannan Khan, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Abdul Mannan and Mukul Bose. Later, they took out a procession that paraded through different roads before ending at Topkhana crossing.
