Accused clash with Rab on Khulna court premises
3 arrested, 7 others manage to escape

The Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) injured and caught dreaded criminal Maruf Billah after a clash with his men on the premises of Khulna Judge Court yesterday morning .

Two others were also injured in the fight but seven others managed to escape. All of them are accused in BNP leader Habib Sarder murder case and they went to the court to surrender themselves.

The injured -- Maruf, his father Mozammal Billah, 50, and brother-in-law Shukur Sardar, 28, -- are now undergoing treatment at the prison cell of Khulna Medical College Hospital.

A six-member team of Rab caught Maruf when he along with nine other accused came out of the court at around 11.30am.

But the other accused attacked the law enforcers, leading to a fistfight for around 15 minutes.

Bleeding profusely, Maruf tried to escape and took shelter at the office room of Judge MA Samad but in vain.

According to witnesses, Rab members fired two blank shots when they came under attack.

Police also fired six shots into the air mistaking the plain-clothes Rab members for criminals, they said.

"We thought that unidentified miscreants were trying to abduct Maruf," said a police constable seeking anonymity.

When contacted, District Judge MA Samad did not comment but he regretted the incident.

Acting Police Commissioner Sazzad Ali said his men fired only two shots for security reasons. He declined to comment when asked if Rab has any legal authority to arrest anybody from the court.

Additional police have been deployed in the court areas following the incident. OC Mosharraf Hossain of Khulna thana has filed a general diary.

Meanwhile, Rab in a press statement said Maruf Billah is a regional leader of Khulna-Bagerhat unit of Janajuddha faction of PBCP and a FIR-named accused in Jamaat leader Moulana Gazi Abu Bakar murder case. He is also a wanted criminal.

Rab also said that a group of 15 or 16 miscreants with four firearms made an attempt to snatch Maruf after its member caught him.
