Metering system will be reintroduced for all domestic gas connections in the capital in January to check the wastage of natural gas, said State Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources AKM Mosharraf Hossain yesterday. He also called for raising awareness to minimise the wastage of energy and suggested recycling the wastes. Wastes can be turned into resources through recycling using local technology, but most people are not aware of it, he said at a discussion on 'Waste minimisation for sustainable consumption'. Nature Alliance, an organisation campaigning for environment care, organised the discussion to mark the launch of Waste Minimisation Club at Gulshan in the city. The participants called on all to refrain from over-consumption as it generates more wastes. Younger generation, especially students, can play a vital role in raising awareness about it, they said. People destroy 86 percent resources through consumption, said Uchita De Zoysa, executive director of the Centre for Environment and Development, Sri Lanka. "If we want to lead a better life, we should promote sustainable consumption," said Mohiuddin Babar, convenor of the Nature Alliance. He said that his organisation would carry out a campaign for sustainable consumption through seminar, quiz competition and environment fair across the country. Mahbubur Rahman, president of International Chamber of Commerce-Bangladesh (ICC-B), also spoke.
