4 cops hurt as robbers hurl bombs


Four policemen including an officer-in-charge (OC) and two locals were injured as robbers threw bombs at them and snatched away a rifle from a patrol police personnel in the early hours yesterday.

Earlier, between 1:30 am to 3:00 am, the robbers had robbed a Brac office at Shaoghat in Rupganj thana of worth around Tk 11 lakh in cash, valuables, ornaments, furniture and office accessories leaving 15 Brac officials injured, police said.

Patrol police signalled six motorbike riders to stop near a bridge in the Kalbazar area at around 3:15 am, which the riders ignored, said police sources.

Police also signalled a truck to stop, but its occupiers hurled hand-made cocktails that injured three police constables Nazmul, Ali Akbar and Sydur Rahman. The robbers also snatched a rifle from injured Nazmul.

Hearing the news, OC AK Barua of Araihazar Police Station rushed to the spot and collected five unexploded crackers. However, as he put those in a water-filled bucket, the crackers exploded injuring Barua and two locals.

Later in a joint raid, police of Araihazar and Rupganj recovered some of the looted goods from the river Brahmaputra under Kachi Kata bridge on Kalibari Manahar Road.
