Dhaka top shooters


Dhaka Rifle Club emerged champions in the three-day National Shooting Championships that ended at the National Shooting Complex in Gulshan yesterday.

Dhaka won only a bronze medal on the final day but Toufiqur Rahman Alo's fantastic treble in pistol events earlier in the meet helped them top the table with five gold, one silver and one bronze. Country's ace female shooter Sabrina Sultana won the other two golds for the club in the rifle events.

There were two golds up for grabs on the final day and Kushtia Rifle Club's Shoebuzzaman got one of them. The leading marksman in the meet won the 50m rifle three position finishing just ahead of Mohammed Anwaruzzaman of Narayanganj Rifle Club. Shoeb scored a total of 1125 points compared to Anwar's 1119.

Veteran Saiful Alam Chowdhu-ry's hopes of winning a gold in this event ended in bronze. The 1995 SAF Games gold medalist scored 1115 points.

Shoaib's second gold enabled Kushtia Rifle Club to finish runners-up with a haul of three gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

They were followed by BKSP Shooting Club with two gold, two silver and two bronzes.

After two disappointing days, hosts Gulshan Club finally the target when Asif Hossain won the 25m rapid fire pistol event scoring 544 points. It was their first success in the meet.

Army Shooting Association's Selim Azad finished a distant second with 534 points while the bronze went to Dhaka Rifle Club's Haider Ali (510 points).
