Even before the crowd could settle into their seat on the second day of the Dhaka Test, New Zealand's James Franklin created a little history for himself. Playing in only his fourth Test, the left-arm seamer became the second New Zealander to take a hattrick after off-spinner Peter Petherick against Pakistan in 1976-77. Franklin first had overnight batsman Manzarul Islam caught behind by wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum in the fifth ball of his first over, which was the second of the morning. The crowd was expecting some Mohammad Rafique antics after his famous century in West Indies earlier this year. But southpaw became the second victim of Franklin when he edged the next ball to second slip. The prospect of becoming the 35th bowler to claim a hattrick in Test cricket looked round the corner as Franklin ran into bowl the first delivery of a new over and Tapash Baisya, the number ten batsman, thought it was safe to let the ball go through to the wicketkeeper. But the ball after pitching on the off-stump held its line before smashing into the stick. And that was music to Franklin's ears who began a celebration that will last forever in his memory. "It was nice to contribute to the team's performance in the first innings. Conditions here for pace bowling is not conducive," said Franklin who also had a hattrick in club level at home. "It was a slow, low wicket and we had to work hard for wickets out there. So we tried to bowl in the right area, hoping for a bit of luck and I think I got that today," said the bowler for whom it was a career-best performance as he finished with 5-28. His previous best was 4-26 against England. Reflecting on the delivery that made history for him Franklin said: "I did not try to bowl on the stumps really. I wanted to swing the ball back into the right-hander because if I was on target, it would give me a chance to get a bowled or an lbw. I made a plan to exploit the off-side corridor and it was just a bit of luck," he added. Franklin whose idol Pakistani legend Wasim Akram was the first bowler to get a hattrick here against Sri Lanka in the Asian Test Championship final in 1999. Interestingly Franklin, who celebrates his 24th birthday on November 7, was the second hattrick-taker against Bangladesh after Zimbabwean pacer Andrew Blignuat last February.
