Cullinan in for Gibbs?

The chances of South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs touring India next month appear to be receding.

Gibbs and teammate Nicky Boje have submitted written answers to questions from Delhi police about match-fixing allegations dating back to 2000.

But uncertainty remains as to whether they could face further action once they set foot on Indian soil.

Western Province Boland coach Peter Kirsten has been quoted as saying that Gibbs will not make the trip.

The 30-year-old has scored more than 9,600 runs for South Africa in Tests and one-day games.

But he is short of form and confidence and has been left out of the Boland team following two defeats in the Supersport Series.

South Africa's selectors, including new national team coach Ray Jennings, will meet next week to pick the tour party.

And veteran batsman Daryll Cullinan has been asked to make himself available after retiring from international cricket three years ago.

He has an excellent Test record against India, averaging almost 53 in eight matches, and his inclusion would add vital experience should Gibbs be left out.

Gibbs, Boje, then captain Hansie Cronje and Piet Strydom were all charged with "cheating, fraud and criminal conspiracy relating to match-fixing and betting" following the 2000 tour.

Gibbs was later fined 5,800 pounds and suspended from international cricket for six months by the United Cricket Board after admitting he accepted an offer of money from Cronje before a one-day match in Nagpur.

However, he claimed he forgot to get out cheaply once he had begun batting.

Boje has denied any wrongdoing.

Cronje subsequently died in a plane crash but the inquiry into the other three remains open, although Strydom is no longer part of the national squad.
