UEFA Champs League
Let down by the fans

Between them they have played almost 600 times in European competition and been crowned champions six times, but Tuesday's clash of the titans here between Juventus and Bayern Munich drew a paltry crowd of just 18,000. Juventus won the match 1-0 thanks to Pavel Nedved's late strike which maintained the Italians' 100 per cent record and put them on the brink of a place in the knockout stages, while Bayern saw their flawless record ended and still have some work to do to advance from Group C. The game, the first meeting of the two teams in Europe, was relatively dull in terms of entertainment, matching the apathy shown by the thousands of fans who stayed away from the Delle Alpi stadium, which holds around 70,000. Bayern's fans played their part with around 2,000 making the trip to Turin, but the Juve faithful chose to give the game a wide berth. Juve coach Fabio Capello admitted to feeling sad that the turnout was so low for a match between two of Europe's most prestigious clubs. "They deserved better - it's a real shame," he said. "I don't understand why, but these days they have been staying away." The drop in temperature and the fact that the Delle Alpi is not easy to reach by public transport may have had an impact on the attendance, but it is not unusual to see empty seats at first round matches in Turin. Only 6,000 were present for the 1-0 win at home to Maccabi Tel-Aviv last month and a thousand of those were visiting fans. Juve are one of the best supported teams in Italy, but paradoxically many of them live in the south and rarely attend matches, preferring to follow the games on television rather than make the long journey north. With both defences on top, it seemed Tuesday's match would inevitably end in a draw until Nedved pounced on the hour. Lilian Thuram's long ball upfield was flicked on by Zlatan Ibrahimovic's haed for Nedved, whose left-footed shot gave Bayern keeper Oliver Kahn no chance. Four-time European champions Bayern were denied an equaliser moments later when Gianluigi Buffon tipped Bastian Schweinsteiger's fierce drive over the crossbar.
