Better learn English!

Berlin's policemen are to get crash courses in English to make them more effective during the 2006 football World Cup finals, a spokesman said Wednesday.

The Der Tagesspiegel newspaper said that 20 policemen would be selected for the first of the English classes at the Berlin police academy.

The authorities believe that a working knowledge of English would help police cope with the many fans expected to attend the finals from around the world.

"The main common language in football is certainly English," the police spokesman said.
