BDR-BSF coordination a must to reduce human trafficking

Effective coordination and cooperation between the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and the Border Security Forces (BSF) of India can help reduce the human trafficking, said the speakers at a seminar yesterday.They said 50 percent trafficking of women and children take place through 28 points along the border of the two countries. The seminar on the 'Role of Bangladesh in combating human trafficking' was organised by the Bangladesh Society for the Enforcement of Human Rights (BSEHR) at its seminar room in the city. The speakers said gradual awareness among the people has reduced the trafficking in South Asian region. Close cooperation among the sending and receiving countries is needed to combat the trafficking, they added. Prof Ishrat Shamim, president of the Centre for Women and Children Studies, said trafficking is one of the worst forms of violence. Poverty is not the only reason for trafficking. Now a days Internet and the websites also lead to trafficking through lucrative offer, she added. Advocate Alena Khan, executive director of the BSEHR said it is unfortunate that cases of trafficking are filed in the name of abducted persons. Besides, most of the cases remain pending due to lack of witnesses and evidences, she added. BSEHR Secretary General Sigma Huda, BNWLA Executive Director Advocate Salma Ali and President of Nijera Kori Khushi Kabir were present on the occasion. The BSEHR organised the seminar to mark the election of Sigma Huda as the first ever Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Person in the United Nations from Bangladesh. She will meet with UN head division on November 9 and start her working.
