Top Khulna criminal dies in 'crossfire'

A listed top criminal and arms smuggler was killed in crossfire between the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and criminals in Labanchhara yesterday, said a Rab press release.Shohag Morol, 30, son of former Ansar platoon commander Liaquat Morol, was arrested Saturday from his house in East Baniakhamar. He was an accused chargesheeted in 15 criminal cases including those of murders and rape, said the press release. The Rab came under attack by Shohag's accomplices when the elite force took him to Labanchhara to seize his arms and ammunition at 2:30am, the Rab release said. The Rab returned fire, firing 12 shots. Shohag died on the spot during the shootout. One pipegun, one foreign-made revolver, one shutter gun, four bombs and five bullets were seized from the spot. The news release said Shohag was raised in a family of criminals. His father was accused of murder. His elder brother Shahid Morol was accused of 12 criminal offences, and younger brothers Badal and Johnny, are in Khulna jail. Moni, his youngest brother and accused of arms and drugs smuggling, is now on the run. Hearing the news of Shohag's death, jubilant locals brought out a procession in East Baniakhamar at 10:30am yesterday.
