Two JCD men nabbed for extortion at Bakshibazar

The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's court yesterday placed Buet unit Joint Secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) Zakir Hossain and his associate Moniruzzaman on one-day remand after their arrest by the Cobra team of police on charge of extortion at a transport agency in Bakshibazar.

Witnesses said some 10 youths went to Sonar Bangla Transport Agency at Bakshibazar intersection at 8:00pm Saturday and demanded Tk 5,000 for a function to be held the following morning.

Ashraful Islam, manager of the transport agency, filed an FIR (first information report) under Speedy Trial Act with Lalbagh Police Station mentioning that the youths threatened to kill the agency people in case of non-payment of the money.

The manager, meanwhile, informed Cobra Inspector Azad Rahman of the incident by phone. A team of eight Cobra men took position around the transport agency.

Zakir and Moniruzzaman went there at 10:15pm and were caught red-handed while receiving the money.

Meanwhile, Buet Chhatra League in a statement demanded exemplary punishment of Zakir and his gang and their expulsion from Buet.
