5 killed, 40 hurt in bus crash


Five people were killed and 40 others injured when a bus skidded off the road and fell into a ditch in Sadar upazila of Jhenidah district yesterday.

Police and locals said the accident took place on the Dhaka-Khulna highway at Porahati when a Dhaka bound vegetable-laden truck collided with the Jessore bound passenger bus at about 2:30pm, killing four, including the bus driver, on the spot and injuring 41 others.

Of the injured, an unidentified passenger aged about 30 succumbed to his injuries at Jhenidah Sadar Hospital, while others are undergoing treatment.

Two of the dear are bus driver, Montu, 35, and Anan, 7. The identity of the rest could not be known.

The driver and helper of the truck managed to flee soon after the accident. Police seized both the vehicles.
