Tk 609 cr needed to repair flood-hit embankments
Minister tells JS standing committee


Some 2,882km earth embankment out of 9,462km constructed by the Water Development Board have been damaged by the flood this year.

Besides, the flood has damaged 80km protective work, 567km irrigation and drainage canal and 621 sluices, regulators, bridges and culverts.

Informing this at the parliamentary standing committee meeting yesterday, Water Resources Minister Hafizuddin said Tk 609 crore would be required for rehabilitation of the infrastructure.

The first phase of the work on priority basis to be done by December would require Tk 96.40 crore. Another Tk 400.73 crore under the midterm programme for completion by June next year and Tk 111.77 crore under the long-term programme for completion by June 2006 would be needed for reconstruction.

The meeting was also informed that repair work done on emergency basis had cost about Tk 43 crore.

Presided over by Hafizuddin the meeting was attended by state minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Abdur Razzak, Mohammad Harunur Rashid Harun, KM Anwarul Islam, AKM Selim Reza Habib and M Naser Rahman.
