Abduction for ransom rises in Bandarban
Police cannot cope with abductors equipped with sophisticated weapons


People in remote hilly areas are leaving their homes towards Bandarban town due to rise in abduction for ransom.

Sainga, Betchhara, Tarasa, Baghmara, Monjoypara, Noapatang areas in Roangchhari upazila turned into a heaven for criminals, according to ex-Union Parishad (UP) member Ameer Hamza.

Policemen with obsolete 303 old rifles are unable to check the criminals who have sophisticated arms and ammunition.

Communist insurgents of Mayanmar and local tribal youths are allegedly committing the crimes, according to local people.

Retired army personnel Siddiqur Rahman and Abdul Khaleque were abducted from Sainga area for Tk 10 lakh ransom on September 18, according to police.

Nobody knows their whereabouts.

Two goat traders Sukumar Nath and Sudhangsu Nath were abducted on August 7 from Sualak area. Their bodies were found after nine days of abduction from Sharonpara.

Businessman Abdul Khaleque was abducted from Faitang area in Lama upazila on August 5, whose body was found two days later.

Rajbila UP chairman and Upazila BNP secretary Rui Pru Ang Chowdhury were abducted on July 15 while businessman Siraj was abducted on July 18. They were released after seven days on payment of ransom.

An unidentified person was abducted from Sadar upazila on April 5 while Hill Students' Parishad leader U Shai Thoai was abducted from Dalupara Union on April 18. UP chairman candidate Kaa Ching Ang was abducted on May 18 and Kao Hla Tripura was abducted from Roangchhari on June 11.

They managed to return to their homes, but criminals murdered a Bengali and dumped him at Sualak. He was abducted on March 6.

Abducted hillside resort manager Hasan Mahbub Babul was released on February 2 on payment of Tk 15 lakh to criminals.

Two aborigines were abducted on March 3 and 4. One of them, a farmer was abducted from Sainga while the other one a young girl who was abducted from Roangchhari area.
