Survey Reveals in Mymensingh
Sex workers keen to return to normal life

Most of the sex workers at a brothel here want to return to normal life if they are provided with necessary financial support or employment opportunity to lead a dignified life.

This was revealed following a survey conducted by the Social Service Department (SSD) in April this year.

Out of 199 sex workers in the brothel, 102 want to start a normal life if they are rehabilitated, according to the report.

The survey report further said, 81 sex workers came to the profession to earn a living while 18 came to this dark world due to family nuisance and 72 came to the hell willingly.

The SSD authorities prepared a list according to sex, age, causes of selecting the shameful profession and workers' opinions. The list was sent to the concerned authorities to take necessary steps.

Following demands made by different quarters to demolish the brothel from the heart of the town, the issue was discussed previously in the district law and order meeting. But many apprehend the plan is being foiled by influential pimps. Traders on the Station Road, on condition of anonymity, told this correspondent that customers, especially female customers have to face an embarrassing situation most often as the main approach of the brothel leads to the main road of the town.

Sometimes, drunkards shout loudly at broad day light while entering the brothel or during their exit, shopkeepers alleged.

However, no remarkable progress was made to demolish the brothel as yet.

Although it was a suggestion of the survey report to discourage people from going to the brothel, yet it went unheeded.

The SSD Deputy Director, Sabbir Imam informed that efforts are being made for rehabilitation of willing sex workers.
