Prices of different varieties of rice have decreased significantly in local markets since launching of the Open Market Sale (OMS) of rice on Thursday. The OMS programme has pushed the prices down and the fall ranges between Tk 3 and 2 per kg, according to market sources. Coarse rice is now being sold at Tk 14 against Tk 17 per kg before the start of the OMS. The price of fine quality Paijam has decreased by Tk 2 per kg. Paijam is now on sale at Tk 18 per kg against Tk 20 to 21 only a few days back. Wholesalers at Sakal Bazaar told newsmen that prices of rice have started falling with launching of the OMS. The market would be stabilised if the operation continued. Appreciating the introduction of the OMS, retailer Aizal disclosed that rice prices had started coming down. He blamed the hoarders for pushing the prices up, as there had been no dearth of rice supply in the market.
