Ensure food for starving people in n-region: CPB

Expressing grave concern at the prevailing Monga or famine-like situation in the northern region, the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) yesterday strongly criticised the alliance government for not taking steps to provide food for starving people.

At a presidium meeting, the CPB leaders alleged that the government wanted to kill people by starving them.

They called on all to build a countrywide movement demanding steps to ensure food and job opportunity.

Referring to the move to give indemnity to the World Bank (WB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the CPB leaders said the government wants to please the imperialists by surrendering the sovereignty of the country.

They called for a united movement against such steps of the government.

The CPB also called on all to observe the 'Demonstration Day' on October 30 to protest price spiral of essentials and the indifferent attitude of the government towards the Monga-stricken people.

Presided over by CPB President Manzurul Ahsan Khan, the meeting was also addressed by CPB General Secretary Muzahidul Islam Selim, Prof M M Akash, Shah Alam and Sheikh Muniruzzaman.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) also demanded that the government provide food for the starving people in the northern region to tackle the Monga.

In a statement, it urged the government to take immediate steps to check price spiral of essentials and to create job opportunity for the people who are starving in the northern districts because of Monga.
