Q & A
'Suddenly I noticed a chopped hand on my keyboard'- Tutul
SI Tutul is a popular musician, a keyboardist of the popular band LRB and recently instrumentalist-turned-singer. In the course of his career, Tutul has carved a niche for himself in the music world of Bangladesh. Recently, he spoke to our cultural correspondent on issues close to his heart. Excerpts from the interview:

Why sport a bandana?
I am a great fan of Axl Rose, the vocalist of famous rock band Guns n' Roses. He used to wear such a band on his head and I just followed him. Don't think that I am bald. It's just a fashion.

Is talent an important criterion in the media?
It is 'the' most important element, because an artiste cannot shine unless she or he has potential or talent. Then again, if you don't have initiative or sincerity, you can never flourish in the media. But most of all you must enjoy the work. Otherwise one can never do justice to the profession.

Who do you think came first, the egg or the hen?
May be, the hen, because the hen produces the egg. Well, I am not sure… only God can tell. May be both the egg and hen came first. The question is 'tricky' and till now remains an unresolved mystery.

Want to share a weird experience with your fans?
Once I was invited at the Dhaka Medical College premises to perform with LRB. It was a wintry evening. I was playing with full passion when suddenly I noticed a chopped hand on my keyboard. Without paying much heed I just moved it from my instrument. And it felt icier than the usual human hands. However, when I started to play again I found the hand was placed before me again. I was really annoyed. But, to my horror, I saw that it was a hand that didn't belong to a living person. I was really scared by then and began to scream and tremble. Then I saw a medical student, all wrapped with a shawl, laughing from the sidelines. And it became clear that this boy was trying to play a practical joke at my expense. Oh! I can never forget that event.

What would you do if you won a million dollar in a lottery?
I would rush to a music shop and buy my favourite musical instruments to my heart's content. And about the rest of the money? Well, I would give it to my wife and let her spend it any way that appeals to her.

What would you do if your were chosen to be the Prime Minister for a day?
I don't think I would ever accept the offer. It is a Herculean task to run a country. The head of the state hardly has a family life. He or she gets so embroiled with problems and solutions that they have very little time for themselves.

I would rather take the responsibility of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. I would give the cultural personalities, especially those who have less media exposure, the best facilities to flourish in the entertainment world. (Smilingly) And last of all, I would try to retain the power for more than a day.

The best movie you have watched so far?
It is hard to tell because I have so many favourites on my list! Well, to name a few: Home Alone was an excellent movie. I also liked the action Terminator2: The Judgement Day. At home I like the Liberation War movies like Ora Egaro Jan and Aguner Parashmani . This is also because I feel inclined towards such movies because my father was martyred in the war. Besides, I like the religious movies like Arc of Noah. Sunflower is another of my favourites.

The best book you have ever read?
I don't have much time to read books now a days. Still when I was a student I used to read a lot from the Bangla literature like Manik Bondyapadhhyay, Budhhbev Basu and Bankimchandra Chattyapadhhyay.

What songs appeal to you most?
Scorpions are my all time favourites especially their Wind of Change and Holidays are great ones. Again Bryan Adams, Sting, Richard Marx, Mark Anthony, Pink Floyd, and The Doors are also my very favourite artistes and bands.

What if you were told to give up your career as a singer?
I would either settle in the Himalayas or commit suicide, that is for sure. Because music is my life and I cannot live without music.
