The unlicensed rickshaws seized in the capital are being sent to districts to fill up the 'quotas' for the ruling BNP lawmakers and ministers, sources said. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is seizing the three-wheelers to ease traffic congestion in Dhaka and sending them to districts from the dumping ground in Agargaon. The government has decided to distribute the seized rickshaws among the poor people across the country. But sources alleged the constituencies of the ministers and ruling BNP lawmakers are getting priority in the distribution process. The authorities have already sent 250 rickshaws to Daudkandhi in Comilla, the constituency of Health Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain. Another 250 rickshaws will be sent there soon, sources at Daudkandhi Police Station said. Some 150 rickshaws have been sent to Munshiganj for the constituencies of Information Minister M Shamsul Islam and BNP lawmaker Abdul Hye. M Abdus Sattar, project implementation officer of Mushiganj Sadar upazila, received the rickshaws on Thursday. Sources said 400 rickshaws have been sent to the constituency of Agriculture Minister M K Anwar last month and 200 more will be sent there. The rickshaws will be distributed among the people enlisted by union parishad chairmen and members, said Mohammad Sumon, who came to Agargaon on Thursday to receive the rickshaws allotted for Daudkandhi upazila. He said the rickshaws will be distributed among the poor almost free of cost. "Only Tk 300 will be taken as transport cost." Asked, Deputy Commissioner (South) of DMP Ansar Uddin Khan Pathan denied the allegation of 'quota' for ministers and ruling party leaders. He said the rickshaws are being sent following requests from the district administrations.
