Police action on N'ganj procession
40 injured, 15 arrested

Forty leaders of different political parties and garment workers were injured in a police action on their procession in Narayanganj yesterday.Police also arrested more than 15 people when the leaders and workers were marching in a procession to mark the first anniversary of death of a garments worker killed in police firing in Narayanganj last year. Police arrested a number of leaders of Communist Party of Bangladesh, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal and Chhatra Front and several garments workers. To protest the police action, different organisations staged demonstrations in Dhaka and condemned the police repression on the procession. At a rally at Paltan, Bangladesh Garment Workers Trade Union Centre demanded action against the policemen responsible for injuring the protesters. It also demanded immediate release of the leaders and workers. The CPB, BSD and Left Democratic Front also condemned the police action. In a statement, CPB leaders Shahidullah Chowdhury and Muzahidul Islam Selim said it would not be possible to stifle people's voice through arrest and torture. They also demanded immediate release of the leaders and workers.
