Diarrhoea claims 12 in Gaibandha, Sirajganj

Diarrhoea has claimed the lives of 12 people and affected several hundred others in the last two days in the northern districts of Gaibandha and Sirajganj, both severely hit by the recent floods.The water-borne disease has broken out in epidemic proportion in Gaibandha, claiming six lives during the last 24 hours, UNB district correspondent reported Friday quoting official sources. And more than 100 people were affected with the disease during the period. A source in the district Civil Surgeon Office said medical teams were working 'round-the-clock' in all 82 unions. "But medical supplies are not adequate," he said. Higher authorities have been informed about the medicine crisis. In Sirajganj, six people, including five children, died of diarrhoea and over 600 were affected in the last 48 hours. Chouhali, Salanga, Kazipur and Shahjadpur are the worst affected upazilas. Civil Surgeon office, however, put the figure of deaths at four and said medical teams had been sent to the affected areas.
