Real after Robinho

Real Madrid are targeting Brazil striker Robson de Souza Robinho as their next high profile catch, local media reported here Saturday.

His agent Wagner Ribeiro had a meeting with Real Madrid's director of marketing Jose Angel Sanchez, the man who sealed the move of David Beckham to the Spanish capital, to discuss a possible transfer on Saturday.

"The player definately wants to play for Real Madrid, they are one of the best clubs in the world, and they are interested in the situation of the player. At the moment, he's considered to be Pele's succesor," Ribeiro told Spanish national agency EFE.

Ribeiro didn't reveal what Real's offer was but other reports in Spain suggested that they were prepared to pay around 20 million euros.

The 20-year-old is currently under contract with Brazil first division side Santos, the club who discovered and nurtured Pele, until 2008.

However, Real are not alone in wanting to sign Robinho.

Ribeiro revealed that Benfica, PSV Eindhoven and Chelsea have also tabled offers, with the English Premiership side apparently matching Real's cash.

"In the coming season he's definately going to be playing for one of the top clubs in Europe, one that's in the Champions League," added Ribeiro.

One sticking point is that Real currently have three non-European Union players on their books - fellow Brazilains Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo, as well as Argentine defender Walter Samuel - the limit in the Spanish first division.

However, Roberto Carlos is in line to get dual nationality in the coming months, which may clear a spot for his compatriot.
