Rafique passes Mahmud

Mohammad Rafique overtook Khaled Mahmud as the leading wicket-taker in one-day internationals for Bangladesh when the ace left-arm spinner finished with his career best 4-63 against New Zealand yesterday.

Rafique, also the top wicket-taker in Tests for the Tigers, now has 56 wickets from 69 matches compared to medium-pacer Mahmud's 54 victims.

His previous best was 3-56 against Kenya in May 1998 in a triangular series in India also involving the hosts.

The left-hander was brought to open the Bangladesh innings and it revived memories of that very match against the Kenyans where Rafique opened the batting and hammered 78 in Bangladesh's maiden one-day victory in ODIs. But this, time, he was not that lucky as he perished for 19 after hitting some lusty blows.
