Workshop for newsmen on AIDS prevention

A workshop for journalists on HIV/AIDS prevention, organised by Marie Stopes, Bangladesh, was held at Brahmanbaria Press Club recently. Thirty journalists representing different national and local dailies attended in workshop styled 'Advocacy, Information Sharing and Awareness Raising Meeting'. It was followed by Ifter. AKM Fazle Khuda, Project Co-ordinator of Marie Sstopes, presented the keynote paper and discussed the role of the media in HIV/AIDS prevention. The workshop was told that Bangladesh is vulnerable for HIV/AIDS because prevalence of the diseases is high neighbouring India and Barma. They only effective way to check spread of the disease is to launch a massive campaign to create awareness among people, the speakers said. The risk groups are sex workers, cross-border moving transport workers and drug addicts. There should be special programmes to bring them under some sort of surveillance, they said. Awareness should be raised among all risk group including sex workers to save the nation from the engulfing of HIV/AIDS.
