Flyovers and traffic jam
Ziauddin Khan Urban Planner/Designer, Chittagong
I'm writing in response to your headline coverage of the Mohakhali Flyover opening (Friday, November 5, 2004)That even the prime minister expressed apprehension that the Mohakhali Flyover may cause traffic congestion in other nearby locations is evidence of piecemeal interventions in traffic management of Dhaka city. Your coverage also reported a proposal, besides others, for relocating the Kamalapur Railway Station out of the Capital to Tongi or Joydevpur to ease inner city traffic. A similar proposal was made regarding the Chittagong Central Railway Station, in the 1980's, to relocate it from its present location on Station Road in the city centre to the outskirts in Pahartali. Good sense, however, prevailed and the new station was built at the end of the lines beyond the old station. This has eliminated the need of extensive transportation from the city centre to the station for travellers leaving and increased ease of availing onward transport for passengers arriving in the city. *** After a long wait of several years, our dream has come true. It is the grand gala opening of the Mohakhali Flyover ( MFO). During its construction we used to pass through Dhaka Cantt, Kakoli on several occasions and were eagerly counting the days of its completion. We had a great hope that the flyover would reduce our suffering from traffic jam that we had to face every time in the Cantonment area. At last the day came and MFO is now open to the public, at the same time the KachukhetCantonment--- Kakoli link road has been closed for them. Here lies the pivotal question what relief MFO has brought to the public !! Yesterday I had to go to Banani. Before opening of MFO, I could go there using the link road. But today I found it closed , and finding no other options I had to use MFO where I got stuck for one hour and a half and the same on the way back. An unbearable traffic jam paralysed me at Iftar time. Dr. Sakina Sultana Professor and Ex- Chairman, Pharmacy Department, Jahangirnagar University
