Strike at Benapole land port stops trade
Staff Correspondent, Khulna
Trade through Benapole land port remained suspended since Sunday noon due to an indefinite strike called by the Indian truckers demanding release of their two fellows. On November 19, Bongaon police arrested truck drivers Chandan and Robin at Petrapole suspecting their involvement in looting two trucks laden with goods exported to India by a garment industry of Dhaka. The Indian truckers began the strike on December 5 as the deadline they had given earlier to release Chandan and Robin expired on December 4. According to Benapole Customs sources, the indefinite strike has virtually paralysed export-import trade between the two countries through the land port. A large number of trucks laden with goods perishable and non-perishable remained stranded on both sides of Benapole and Petrapole borders since Sunday noon, the sources said.
