New chairman of BIA
M Shamsul Alam, founder managing director of Reliance Insurance Limited, has recently been elected chairman of the Bangladesh Insurance Association (BIA) for 2005-2006 term.After obtaining postgraduate degree in Commerce from Dhaka University, he joined Pakistan Insurance Corporation. After the war of liberation, Alam was appointed general manager and subsequently managing director of Sadharan Bima Corporation (SBC). Asian Re-insurance Corporation, Bangkok also elected him its vice-chairman in 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984. He was elected chairman of the organisation for 1985, 1986 and 1987. He also served Jiban Bima Corporation as managing director for a year until he voluntarily retired and sponsored Reliance Insurance Limited in 1988.
