Male inhabitants in 11 villages fled from their homes in a bid to evade arrest after a police-villagers clash on November 20.In absence of males, miscreants are committing various crimes including rape in the area. 'Eight to 10 miscreants raped a mother of two children at our village on November 29. Now the victim is being treated by a physician in the area', according to a schoolmaster at Aruapara village who preferred anonymity. On contact, Shalikha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) expressed his ignorance about the rape incident. He said unruly villagers attacked a police team injuring five policemen on the day. At that time policemen were trying to prevent people from a clash with villagers of Dhigolgram in Shalikha upazila over fishing at a local beel (water body). A case was lodged with Shalikha Police Station accusing 53 people, he said. 'Police will arrest only those who were involved in the incident. No innocent people will be harassed,' OC asserted. Local people alleged, although 'Latar Beel' is owned by Hindu community, yet every year villagers of Dhigolgram catch fish forcibly from there. This year people of 11 villages including Aruapara, Tuknapara, Raghobdayeer, Kushabaria and Kalisankarpur jointly held a meeting and decided to catch fish from the beel at any cost. But a clash occurred between the villagers and police near Tuknapara when the villagers were moving towards the beel. Policemen charged baton to disperse the mob. Police arrested three persons from the spot. They also arrested 23 villagers from Aruapara, Tuknapara and Raghobdayeer villages on the night of November 21. The arrested persons were sent to jail.
