Seed Shortage
Expedite production to meet growing demand
Minister urges private farms

Amid reports of seed shortages, the government offered assistance to private sector farms for production of seeds to meet a growing demand for quality seeds with local produce.

Assuring the government cooperation, Agriculture Minister MK Anwar urged the private sector to expedite their seed- production operations.

He said this at a meeting with a delegation of Chinese seed growers and their local counterpart Aftab Farms Ltd. at his office in the city yesterday.

The minister said public organisations like BADC are enhancing their seed production, but this is not adequate to meet the demand.

"Come up in a bigger way and the government will continue its support", he urged the private seed producers.

He said that the government is committed to providing all-out support to private sector in producing quality seeds of all crops, including paddy and maize.

Aftab Farm produced 10 tons of hybrid paddy seeds last year with the technical cooperation of Chinese farm Yuan Longping High-Tech Ltd and they have the target of producing 15 tons this year.
