Govt out to erase Bangabandhu's name : Hasina
UNB, Dhaka
Opposition leader Sheikh Hasina yesterday blamed the government for 'destroying' the country's economy, image and history of independence and spoiling the main principles of the constitution in a planned way."The present government is trying to erase the name of Bangabandhu, but the concept of Bangladeshi nationalism keeping Bangabandhu aside is nothing but a concept of 'Pakistani nationalism'," she said. Addressing a discussion meeting organised by the Awami League (AL) at 32 Dhanmondi in observance of the Victory Day, she called for unity to uphold the sprit of the Liberation War and resist this 'corrupt' government. Hasina, also president of the Awami League, blamed former president Ziaur Rahman for destroying the spirit of the War of Independence and rehabilitating 'Razakars' in politics. "The spirit of the Liberation War was to build a poverty and hunger-free Bangladesh," she said, adding, "That spirit has already been spoiled by the alliance government." About terrorism, she said there are godfathers behind the terrorists and it is not possible to control terrorism as long as 'the godfathers are kept under cover.' The discussion was addressed, among others, by Syeda Sejeda Chowdhury, Amir Hossain Amu, Motia Chowdhury, Sheikh Selim, Tofail Ahmed, Abdur Razzaq, Abdul Jalil, Obaidul Kader, Asaduzzaman Noor and Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, litterateur Syed Shamsul Haq and Supreme Court Bar Association President Rokanuddin Mahmud. Abdur Razzaq said the BNP-Jamaat government wants to distort the history of the Liberation War because they were opposed to independence of Bangladesh. Jalil called upon the pro-liberation forces to get united to dislodge the present coalition government.
