Wenger pays the price

The English Football Association (FA) on Thursday found Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger guilty of improper conduct and fined him 15,000 pounds (29,000 dollars).

Aside from the fine, the FA "severely reprimanded" Wenger -- who was not present at the hearing -- and warned the Frenchman about his future conduct.

Wenger denied the charge of improper conduct, which was levelled after his comments about Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy in an interview following Arsenal's 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford on October 24 - a loss that ended the champions' English top-flight record of 49 unbeaten league games.

Wenger was angered by the Dutchman's knee-high challenge on Ashley Cole, which subsequently resulted in the striker being banned for three matches.

He said in a BBC TV interview: "We know how Ruud van Nistelrooy behaves. He can only cheat people - we know him very well."
