Court permits probe into threat to Hasina's family

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, Dhaka, yesterday gave permission to investigate the reported death threat to Leader of the Opposition and Awami League (AL) chief Sheikh Hasina, her son and daughter-in-law, on which a general diary (GD) was filed.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Shafiqul Islam allowed a probe following a petition by the investigation officer (IO), Sub-inspector Julfiker Ali of Dhanmondi Police Station, where the GD was filed.

In his petition, the IO said it is a 'non-cognizable' offence, and permission from court is needed to investigate the matter.

AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil on Wednesday filed the GD with Dhanmondi Police Station, saying an e-mail was sent to the Daily Janakantha in the name of one Nazrul on December 25 threatening to kill Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajib Wazed Joy and daughter-in-law Christine. A similar threat was made through an e-mail in the name of one Ershad H Azad from Mahakhali in the Capital.

The GD mentioned that in his e-mail, Ershad claimed responsibility for the August 21 grenade attack at Hasina's public meeting in the capital, and said his associates SM Saidur Rahman and Milan Sarker were involved in the attack.

Earlier, Shaibal Saha Partha was arrested on suspicion of e-mailing the Prothom Alo threatening to kill Hasina.
