Usha survive Ajax scare

A late rally saw Usha Krira Chakra come from a first-half deficit to beat Ajax Sporting Club 3-1 in the opening match of the Green Delta Premier Hockey Super League at the Maulana Bhasani Stadium yesterday and remain at top of the table.

Bottom-table Ajax took the lead against the league leaders through defender Mohammed Hassan Rony on the stroke of the breather from a penalty-corner.

Usha, who failed to utilise five set-pieces, finally drew level from their sixth penalty-corner when Pakistani centre-half Mohammed Nadim slammed home in the 50th minute.

It took Usha further two minutes to take control with a field goal from captain Moududur Rahman Shuva who added his second goal just two minutes from time.

With nine wins from ten games, Usha have 27 points compared to Ajax's 11 from ten outings.
