Cable operators call off strike

The Cable Operators' Association of Bangladesh (Coab) yesterday called off its three-hour token strike several hours before the strike was scheduled to begin as Dhaka Electric Supply Company (Desco) suspended the cable-clearing drive.

The Coab decided to shut down transmission from 7:00pm to 10:00pm last night in protest against the snapping of cable connections, but it withdraw the strike in the afternoon.

On Wednesday, Desco snapped cable connections of several thousand satellite TV subscribers allegedly without any prior notice in the city's Gulshan, Banani, DOHS and Baridhara areas.

It launched the drive in the name of beautification of the city ahead of Saarc summit.

Desco has also demanded Tk 10 per electric post and Tk 10,000 in registration fee from every cable operators for using electric posts for laying cable lines, sources said.

SM Anwar Parvez, president of Coab, said the strike was withdrawn as the Desco authorities agreed not to snap any more cable TV connection and impose any charge until the government fix it in the cable television network policy.
