Formation of Israeli coalition faces hitch

The formation of a new Israeli government, bringing Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's right-wing Likud into a coalition with Labor, could be delayed by the demands of a small ultra-Orthodox party, officials said Friday. Although the last stumbling block appeared seemed to have been removed Thursday with a deal enabling Labor leader Shimon Peres to become the most senior minister, United Torah Judaism's apparent refusal to come aboard now poses a new challenge. UTJ said Friday that persistent differences did not allow for its participation in the new government although many in Likud want it as a partner.
