SQ Chy invites Hasina to son's wedding

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs Salahuddin Qader Chowdhury yesterday met the Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina to invite the latter to his son's wedding.

Chowdhury's spouse Farhat Qader Chowdhury accompanied him during the meeting, a rarity in Bangladesh politics where top leaders of rival parties seldom meet each other.

"I came here (Hasina's Dhanmondi residence) to invite her (Sheikh Hasina) to my son's wedding," Salahuddin Qader Chowdhury told the journalists waiting outside Awami League president's residence Sudha Sadan. Asked whether Hasina accepted the invitation, Chowdhury declined to comment and asked newsmen to inquire with Hasina.

Chowdhury, who enjoys the status of a cabinet minister, reached Sudha Sadan at 11:30 am and came out at 12:45pm. Wedding of his son Faizul Qader Chowdhury is scheduled for January 5.

AL sources said Hasina regretted that she would not be able to attend the ceremony, as her outdoor movements have been restricted on grounds of security after she narrowly escaped a grenade attack on August 21 last year.

Chowdhury and his wife waited at the living room for Hasina to come down from her first floor room, they were served with sweetmeats. Hasina's son Joy and daughter-in-law Christine were not home at that time. The Chowdhuries, however, inquired about the couple's well-being.
