2 listed criminals killed in 'crossfire' in city, Keraniganj

Two men with criminal records were killed in separate incidents of 'crossfire' between their gangs and police in the capital and adjacent Keraniganj early yesterday.

Dhaka
Police said Alauddin, 32, a listed criminal of Lalbagh, and 10 to 15 of his cohorts opened fire on a team of Lalbagh police when it went to Shahid Nagar Embankment at about 12:30am looking for him.

They said as police counter-fired, Alauddin received three bullets in his head and back, and died on the spot.

However, the victim's family members said police arrested Alauddin from his father-in-law's house on Batta Mosque Lane.

"Police killed my brother in cold blood," Alauddin's elder brother Abdul Motaleb told newsmen at Mitford Hospital morgue.

The duty officer at Lalbagh Police Station said Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Aminul Islam, shot in the leg during the gunfight, was undergoing treatment at Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital. But, the hospital's admission register did not show Aminul being admitted there yesterday.

Locals said Alauddin owned Lamia Gift Corner, a clothes shop at Killar Moar.

Hundreds of businessmen of Lalbagh brought out a procession and distributed sweetmeats among themselves celebrating his death.

Police said Alauddin, an accused in four cases under the arms and explosives acts, was also accused of being involved in the robbery at Rangs-Toshiba showroom in Lalbagh last Sunday.

Police seized two guns and six cartridges from the spot.

Keraniganj
Anwar Hossain alias Baba Anwar, 36, was killed in a 'gunfight' between his accomplices and police at about 4:00am near Nuru Market at Aganagar.

Anwar, a listed criminal of Keraniganj, was accused in 12 cases including one for murder, police said.

Keranigonj police arrested Anwar from a five-storied building on Abdul Hadi Lane in Kotwali.

Acting on his confessional statement, police took him to Charkaliganj in the upazila to nab his accomplices, who opened fire on the law enforcers killing Anwar.

Police arrested one of the attackers named Johny and his wife Nasima. They seized a pipe gun, a revolver, a one-shooter rifle and 26 bullets from the spot.
