Benapole strikers to reconsider as govt halves duties

Exporters, importers and their agents will meet today to reconsider their ongoing strike at Benapole land port following government's decision yesterday to slash down the port duties by 50 percent.

The decision to reduce duties was taken following a meeting of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Shipping in the presence of the National Board of Revenue officials, authorities of customs and the land port, a shipping ministry press release said.

Earlier, leaders of Clearing and Forwarding (C&F) Agents Association, Importers and Exporters Association, Transport Owners Association, C&F Agents Employees Union and Port Handling Workers Union at a joint press conference yesterday said they will lay siege to the administrative building and residential areas of Benapole land port and customs offices today.

The government has incurred a revenue loss of about Tk 20 crore in four days due to suspension of export and import activities, C&F Agents Association sources said.

Meanwhile, after Bhomra land port in Satkhira started functioning again on Monday, about 300 Indian trucks from Petrapole, earlier bound for Benapole, started for Bhomra.
