Anti-govt Action
CPB skips opposition meet

Leaders of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) yesterday did not attend a meeting of the mainstream opposition parties.

Leaders of Awami League (AL), the other components of left 11-Party alliance, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) and National Awami Party (Nap) met at AL's central office on Bangabandhu Avenue to decide on the next course of action in the ongoing oust-government movement.

The meeting scheduled to draw up fresh agitation programmes was postponed till 4:00pm today without taking any decision.

"We have reviewed the previous agitations and discussed prospective programmes, but no decision has been taken," said AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil. He said programmes would be finalised in today's meeting. He said that he hopes CPB would join the meeting.

Ruhin Hossain Prince, a central leader of the CPB, said, "We are in a synchronised movement with Awami League, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and Nap as a component of the left 11-Party alliance. So it's not necessary for us to join opposition meeting every time it takes place."

"Representatives of the 11-Party alliance has joined the meeting and we think that should suffice," he told The Daily Star.

A source in the CPB said that party policymakers are considering backtracking on the combined opposition movement as teaming up with AL has caused resentment among the mid-level leaders.

AL leader Amir Hossain Amu presided over yesterday's meeting that was attended by, among others, Rashed Khan Menon, Hasanul Haq Inu, Alhaj Abdus Samad, Obaidul Quader, Pankaj Bhattacharya, Dilip Barua, Mainuddin Khan Badal, Syed Zafar Sazzad, Sharif Nurul Ambia and Shirin Akhter.

Earlier, CPB leaders did not join the combined opposition rallies at Mongla and Sunamganj in the build-up to the December 30 human wall.
