Asian Women, Health Meet begins Jan 10

The Asia Regional Women and Health Meeting will begin in the country on January 10.The three-day meeting will be held at Vishnupur in Tangail. This was announced at a press conference organised jointly by Narigrantha Prabartana and Ubinig at the National Press Club yesterday. Narigrantha Prabartana Executive Director Farida Akhtar said the regional meeting would set the agenda for the 10th International Women and Health Meeting (IWHM) to be held in New Delhi in September this year. She said the regional meeting is also aimed to take preparations for the five-day IWHM scheduled to begin in the Indian capital on September 21. Farida said the regional meeting would also help create scope for the participants of Bangladesh and other Asian countries to decide the main topics for discussion in the IWHM. Researchers and women's rights activists from 21 Asian countries will take part in the regional meeting. This year the main theme of the IWHM is: Health right, women's life- - formulation of strategy for movement and to face the situations. The IWHM is expected to discuss women's health, reforms in women's health sector, reproductive health, population control policies, women's rights and violence against women. Narigrantha Prabartana Coordinator Sayeda Akhtar, Ubinig Health Researcher Rokeya Begum and Seminar Coordinator Selina Mollik were among others present at the press conference.
