Requiem for crossfire victims !

My attention has been drawn to the poem titled 'Death in Crossfire' composed by our respected former Chief Justice and former head of the Caretaker Government, M Habibur Rahman, which was published in your daily on 2 January 2005. It is a nice poem and probably will receive applause for its literary value. However, the message conveyed through the poem has utterly surprised me. I felt that somehow it is a misplaced notion and does not represent the true feelings of the people of the country. Today's Bangladesh does not cry for the terrorists who are killed in crossfire, rather people are appreciative of the activities of Rab. It has been proved beyond doubt that any sober treatment of terrorism in Bangladesh is no more an option and at least for the time being a direct action is the solution. I have just returned from a visit to Bangladesh and as a person born and brought up in Dhaka, I must say that I have never felt so safe and secure while moving around the city in the past 33 years, i.e., since Bangladesh emerged as an independent nation. Wherever I went people expressed highly complimentary views about Rab actions and, frankly speaking, I personally felt so proud to see that at least such a unique project was conceptualised and put into action by the government which has till date nabbed and taken to task criminals, irrespective of any party affiliations.

Let someone compose a 'chronicle of victory' for the valiant Rab!
